Scholarships for military spouses abound if the seeker knows where to look at to apply. Many husbands and wives of our Armed Forces give up their own pursuit of educational goals in order to support their partners as they move about the country and build their own careers. These family members are as much participants in the sacrifices for our country as their military husbands and wives. These husbands and wives often seek schooling opportunities if an assignment in one place appears to be a long tenured one. But often military families face low pay and cannot afford to face high repayment loans, so scholarships for military spouses are needed to pave the way for degree aspirations.
Listen to these rather depressing statistics. Armed Forces husbands and wives make one to two dollars less per hours than civilian spouses, usually because of the lack of experience or education. Two thirds of all Armed Forces husbands and wives felt that military life adversely affected their ability to get better employment positions. Twenty five percent of all Marine spouses are unemployed much of that reality do the fact of not being trained for marketable careers. And sadly, army spouses are more than three time likely to be unemployed than civilian husbands and wives. Many of these figures are due to very young soldiers marrying right out of high school and many of the husbands and wives left on base are only high school graduates. The Army Aviation Association of America offers tuition gifts ranging from one thousand to ten thousand dollars to husbands and wives of its members. For adult students, a two hundred and fifty word essay is required, highlighting one's life experiences. ThanksUSA offers scholarships for military spouses and preferences are given to those family members whose spouse was killed in active duty. In the same vein, the American Legion offers Legacy tuition gifts also to slain soldiers' family members. Americans can never repay the men and women who have given their lives for our freedom. We can never repay God for deliberately dying on our behalf on a cruel and rugged cross as payment for our sin either. But when we accept that sacrifice for our sin, new life begins. Spouses who wives or husbands are or have been connected with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are eligible for tuition gifts from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. These gifts are for family members already enrolled in college and the focus is on engineering, mathematics, physics and communications students. The Women's Army Corps Veterans Association offers scholarships for military spouses whose wives have been or are in the army now. Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership expressed through community involvement, biographical sketch and recommendations. The Anchor Scholarship Foundation offers scholarships for military husbands and wives who want to begin his or her bachelor's degree at an accredited four year college or university. Financial need is one of the criteria for this gift.
The United States Air Force Aid Society provides partial tuition assistance for spouses of active duty airmen or officers. Husband and wives will have had to accompany their spouse to overseas locations and will be attending courses in foreign countries. This program provides tuition assistance at a rate of 50% of unmet tuition charge per course up to fifteen hundred dollars per year. The desire of the Air Force Aid Society is to provide help for spouses who want to earn degrees that will increase occupational opportunities for the spouses of active duty airmen. Scholarships for military spouses may be available for all the branches of Armed Forces through each branch's aid representatives.
While not one of the formal scholarships for military spouses, the Military Spouse Career Advancement Account is mean to help Armed Forces husbands and wives to gain credentials in high growth vocational fields. The CAA, as it is called, is limited to seventeen bases at the moment, but is good for up to six thousand dollars in educational expenses over a two year period. The Dependents' Educational Assistance program is also set up to provide up to forty five months of educational benefits for family members of certain veterans. These benefits are for spouses of service members who have died in action, are totally disabled, missing in action or detained behind enemy lines. Check with the Veterans administration for the details on these programs.
Some of the most copious sources of scholarships for military spouses may be the many organizations and non-profits around our Armed Forces bases across the country. Many businesses are extremely dependent upon the financial opportunities that a large base provides and are eager to maintain excellent relationships with the base. Service clubs such as Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Elks and others as well as businesses and schools may be excellent sources for scholarships for military spouses. Another source would be churches in and around the base area that may offer yearly gifts to some of their families who need educational assistance. There is a great deal of money that is available for the husbands and wives of our many soldiers, marines and airmen as well as naval personnel.
