Bible Study Outlines

Bible study outlines come in many different forms, short and long, historical or current, and whatever outlines are chosen, the reader will want to make sure it works with his life and purpose for a Scripture course. Bible study commentaries are another source of Scripture descriptions. They offer conversation-like writings that will draw readers into a conversation with God.

There are many acceptable outlines in print. If a person cannot find an outline that he likes or that speaks to him, maybe writing one for himself that meshes a few Bible study outlines together will be a possibility. This decision should be made after prayerfully deciding the purpose for the Scripture course and analyzing the best Bible study commentaries for that purpose. "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15)

Some examples of different types of Bible study outlines are focusing on specific words in the Scripture, focusing on chapters or focusing on whole books. Focus on specific words in the Scripture would involve subject areas, how they are exemplified in the Scripture, and how the situations were handled by God and by man. Focus on chapters would take the student through each chapter of a book or the entire Scriptural collection, and outline the history and lessons. Focus on whole books can better let a person understand the whole picture. This is a good idea after understanding the initial principles the Scriptures teach.

Depending on a person's style of learning, the commentaries might be the better choice. Bible study commentaries are a conversational interpretation of what the Scriptures say. This is only an educated interpretation and should never replace the Bible itself. The commentaries are good for beginning understanding of the Scriptures and for comparison and contrast.

When comparing different views and interpretations, commentaries are a great way to do it. There are a variety of commentaries to choose from. The most important thing to consider when choosing Bible study outlines is the background and morals of the person writing the commentary. If one's goal is to learn different views and perspectives of the Scriptures, remember that when reading a Bible study commentary. It is likely that the reader will find commentaries that the he doesn't agree with or that may be wrong. Just remember that NOTHING replaces sacred Scripture.

Ask around to see what other people have read and their responses to the various commentaries. Keep in mind that every person will have different emotions toward the same reading. Take opinions with a grain of salt. One should keep an open mind and pray for guidance in making the decision regarding Bible study commentaries.
