Books Of The Bible



The books of the Bible were written by different authors over a period 1500 years and the information and teachings within it are as relevant today as they were when the first books were written by Moses. The Word of God is actually made up of sixty-six different books and today the books of the Bible are divided into chapters and verses for easy reference and access to specific teachings, though original manuscripts were not divided or numbered. The books are not necessarily in chronological order, but do work with a specific Bible timeline.



Canon is the official list of books of the Bible that are included in the Old and New Testaments. The development of Old Testament canon was a process that took over 800 years and Ezra is credited with compiling the canon of the Jewish Scripture in the fifth century B.C. The New Testament canon was acknowledged by the early church leaders around A.D. 200.



The book of Genesis, the first book in the Bible and the first of the five books of the Bible in the Old Testament which were written by Moses, tells of the creation story, the fall of man, and the accounts of the Abraham, the first man of faith and his family. Genesis ends with the death of Joseph, son of Jacob and Jewish leader of Egypt.



From Genesis we find a timeline listed in Exodus, which is the second book of Moses. In Exodus there are accounts of the Passover, the exodus from Egypt, and the wanderings of Israel in the desert. The ten commandments is also given in the book of Exodus as are detailed accounts of the tabernacle construction.



From the books of Leviticus to Joshua, are the accounts of the wilderness experience and the lessons taught to Israel this time. In Joshua, the nation of Israel crosses over the Jordan River and into the promised land of Canaan, which is now modern day Israel.



The Bible timeline from Joshua to 2 Kings is accounts of Israel and their leaders. We find that some of the Judges and Kings placed to rule over Israel were faithful to God and some were not. Ultimately, Israel suffered for the sins that the people committed with idols and religious atrocities. Israel was overcome by Assyria and led into captivity by Babylon.



The books of first and second Chronicles tells of the same time periods of first and second Kings. Ezra, Nehemiah, and Ester are historical books from the period during the exile in Babylon and Persia. The book of Job is not placed in any particular Bible timeline, but is a story of great faith in times of trials.



The books of Prophecy in the Old Testament include the Major and Minor prophets which are determined by their length. There are also seven poetic books included in the canon of the Old Testament which includes the Psalms, Proverbs, and the Song of Songs. The Psalms is a collection of 150 Hebrew poems and songs that express emotional responses to an Almighty God.



The New Testament is the portion of the Bible that contains the record of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and how the gospel of Christ spread across the land. The New Testament also contains information and direction for the new and developing church of Christ. The major theme throughout the New Testament is the New Covenant between God and His people and how the New Covenant is made possible by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Son of God.



The New Testament includes twenty-seven books, four accounts of the gospel, the Acts of the Apostles and twenty-one letters written to churches. These books of the Bible were written in a Bible timeline of a period covering about fifty years. The last book of the is the book of Revelation, which a vision that was recorded by John. In the vision, John saw future events and the final great battle between the armies of God and Satan. The book of Revelation ends with the promise of the return of Christ.



A thorough study of the Word of God reveals how God has worked through His people from the beginning of time. Studying a Bible timeline can teach of God's plan and future plans for mankind, showing us how He has developed His plan from Genesis and continues to work out mans salvation until the last days that are explained in Revelations. When we look at the Bible in chronological order, we see how God's promises become reality and how prophecies are fulfilled. A chronological study of God's word is a journey of faith discovery.
