Demons
Demons are a reality of both the spiritual and material world and Christians will want to have specific information about the nature and objectives of these spirit beings that can wreak havoc on a life in many different ways. While Christians should never obsess over the activities of demons or even become overly concerned about their part in the spiritual world, it is important to have a certain amount information regarding the spiritual darkness that is truly a reality in our lives. Because fallen angels and their histories are recorded in the Bible, God obviously has certain aspects that He intends for Christians to understand about these spirits who will one day be bound along side their leader, Satan. First, and foremost, it is important to understand that though these spiritual beings are evil and powerful, they are subjected to Christ the King of the entire universe. And, before embarking on a study of demonology, it is also important to know that Satan is not God's counterpart, as many of us have been taught to believer or understand.
Satan is a created being. Though we are told that Lucifer was a beautiful and high-ranking angel, this being is in no way a match for God. It would be more appropriate to think of this angel cast from heaven as a counterpart to the archangel, Michael. Though Satan is not deity, he is powerful and in this regard, we must take into consideration that this once God glorifying angel is not a mere mystery to be taken lightly either. The best course of action to take when learning about demons and their leader is to discover what the Bible reveals about each and to trust what the Bible explains as the end of their time on earth.
We read in Nehemiah, chapter nine, that all things in heaven and on earth were created by God, and that the heavenly host which were created by Him to worship Him. While the creation of angels or demons is not specifically recorded in the Bible, as is the creation of man, we know that the Bible tells us that God is the creator of every living thing, including spiritual beings. In the book of Isaiah we can get an idea of how fallen angels came to exist in their current state, outside the will of God. "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High" (Isaiah 14:14-14).
In the book of Revelation, we are told that when Satan was band from heaven, he recruited a third of the heavenly host to join him. "And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born" (Revelation 12:3-4). In verses nine and ten of this same chapter, we discover that Satan is called the old serpent that deceives the world and is also referred to as the accuser of the brethren. Verse nine also explains that Satan was cast from the heavens and his angels with him, giving us the clear indication that the fallen angels who left heaven are subject to the authority of Satan. There are other verses in the Bible that give us further glimpses into the activity of these fallen angels. In the book of Daniel, Daniel records that an angel visited him during prayer. "Then said he unto me, fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before the God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but lo Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia" (Daniel 10:12-13). From these scriptures we learn that demonic spirits have specific territories and also may have ranking orders.
The ministry of Christ reveals that demon possession is a very real activity. One primary activity of Christ was healing people of demonic possession. Christ commanded many fallen angels to leave the bodies of those they tormented. And, the demons also recognized and referenced Christ as the true Son of God. Evil spiritual beings may cause mankind many troubles, but they are obviously subjected to Christ's authority and kingship. There are many other scriptures that guide us into truth about not only the earthly activities of demonic spirits, but the heavenly activities, as well.
