Family Friendly Chat Rooms

Finding family friendly chat rooms are a major concern to many who realize that online interaction with others can hold dangers as well as benefits. Unfortunately, many families as a whole are not as computer savvy as they perhaps should be, which has made it much easier for sexual predators and scam artists to access chat rooms where the unaware may converse. Introducing themselves as students or singles, many of these criminally minded people have seduced the unaware into many relationship scenarios that have seriously hurt unsuspecting users. Safe chat rooms that offer security controls and blocking features are available from many hosting sources however, and it is possible to find cyber chats that are very friendly to families.

Parents and older students alike should stay abreast of the ever changing cyber world and would do well to take a basic class in computer technology or to sit down and simply learn about the Internet world. Most students have grown up during a time in history that is dramatically impacted by two worlds: the real world and the virtual world. Many times, both worlds run on parallel tracks in regards to business, social, personal and informational needs. However, the breadth of contact and the speed of communication that the virtual world offers can be both wonderful and very dangerous. An early family understanding about how to maneuver within the virtual landscape is critical in preparing students when they come of age to know how to maneuver technically within this space. Some young, single college students are not prepared to handle the many circumstances that may arise when they have the capability to cruise through family friendly chat rooms as well as lurid adult sites.

There are a few simple guidelines that can be helpful to every family member that has access to the Internet. First, a household should never take for granted that things are ok when a member sits in front of a computer screen for long periods of time without a good reason and reports that they are in one of the safe chat rooms. One of the first rules of accountability for families should be that a computer should be placed in commonly used areas of the home such as the familyroom or recreational space. Most family specialists agree that any member should not have an exclusive computer in a room where no one ever checks it or sees them interact with the virtual world. While security software can limit certain activities, it is relatively easy for a computer savvy user to find information about how to break passwords and codes. Also, most security software will eventually present with a glitch which may cause a problem in parental controls.

Good, ole visual accountability is always best for most families as they provide Internet technologies coupled with common safety restraints for everyone. Secondly, it is helpful for every member of a family to become involved in some of the same activities such as family friendly chat rooms. A friendly camaraderie can be developed among families that enjoy some of the same activities without it becoming a 'patrolling' issue. Also, there is an unspoken accountability for everyone when it is apparent that there is equal footing for all in regards to computer know-how. Thirdly, everyone should be disciplined as to how much time is spent in accessing social networks and even safe chat rooms so that other interests can be properly developed. Fourthly, as mentioned earlier, installing one of the many security software packages that are available for families can be very helpful in the long run.

This can provide a simple, effective method for screening out offensive material and blocking certain questionable sites. Some security packages are more powerful than others and offer different functions which can cause a problem in accessing even family friendly chat rooms. Features that offer customizable settings are usually available which can help limit undue blockage of preferred sites. A fifth important guideline for families that want to insure a safe environment for chat rooms and online surfing is to keep in mind certain safety practices for online use. "A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished." (Proverbs 27:12)

Any user that experiences strange or unusual contacts online, should immediately report the incident to at least one family member or friend. Also, at no time should a user ever give out telephone numbers, residence locations, real names, school or work addresses to anyone. Users must realize that everyone who communicates with them is essentially a stranger no matter how courteous or interesting the person may seem. Even typically safe chat rooms can be invaded by unseemly characters and users should always be nonspecific about personal details in any Internet situation. When families implement these simple guidelines regarding computer use, taking part in family friendly chat rooms can be a rewarding and fun experience for everyone concerned.
