History Of Veteran's Day

The history of Veterans Day includes honoring those who have served or are currently serving in the Armed forces. Before 1954 the holiday was known as Armistice Day. Armistice Day officially began in 1918 to honor World War I veterans. After legislation was approved it became a day to honor all veterans and is officially celebrated on November 11th. Americans can commemorate this holiday by recognizing those who have fought and served to keep American free. One way to do this is to send free Veteran's Day ecards to those who should be recognized. A card can show appreciation and thanksgiving to those who have served their country. There have been many wars and conflicts in the history of America. Often the people who are not directly involved in it or are not affected personally by it do not realize the great sacrifices that are made by servicemen and women and their families. "For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God" (2 Corinthians 9:12). The sacrifices of others has worked towards keeping American free and the people living in a blessed country.

The First World War took place from 1914-1918 resulting in millions of casualties. Millions were killed and millions were missing in action or were prisoners of war. The war began in Europe. An arms race was the main reason for the conflict. The United States did not enter the war until 1917, after Germany sank several U.S. merchant ships with submarines. The history of Veterans Day is largely celebrated to commemorate those who died, were missing in action, and to honor their families. This holiday includes past, present, and future sacrifices by those who have served or will serve.

The Second World War took place from the late 1930's through 1945. Millions lost their lives and the cost of the major conflict cost trillions of dollars. The beginning of the conflict was Japan's invasion of China and Germany's invasion of Poland. The U.S. was brought into the war when Japan attacked the naval base at Pearl Harbor. Atomic bombs devastating Japan brought about surrender and the end to the war. Afterwards the United Nations was formed to help to avoid future conflicts that might lead to a global war. The history of Veterans Day acknowledges all of the servicemen and women who died during this major conflict.

The Vietnam War is the longest conflict that Americans were involved in lasting 16 years from 1959-1975. Vietnam claimed thousands of American lives. Americans were sent in to help the South Vietnamese government from falling. This was and is a very unpopular war with the people. The 16 year conflict did not result in the people or government achieving freedom and democracy. However, the servicemen and women should be honored and recognized for their sacrifice in this cause as they went to serve on behalf of all Americans. The history of Veterans Day should include honoring all of those who served not matter how a conflict is viewed because the ones serving made a great sacrifice. They should be remembered with thanksgiving and gratitude.

The Gulf War led by the United Nations took place from 1990-1991. The coalition of forces including the U.S. drove the Iraqi army from Kuwait. This conflict was the shortest in American history. This conflict left its mark on the servicemen and women with many being afflicted by the Gulf War Syndrome. More can be found on the Internet about the syndrome by doing a search. One way to honor the servicemen and women for their sacrifice in the Gulf War is to send free Veteran's Day ecards. Pray for the men and women who are struggling daily with the after effects of this conflict.

The War on Terrorism is a response from the September 11th attacks where thousands of civilians lost their lives. The conflict began in October of 2001 and is currently ongoing. Several thousand men and women have perished in this conflict and many more have been wounded. Hundreds of thousands of American men and women are currently serving in Iraq to help to secure the new democratic government and help the Iraqi people. Sending free Veteran's Day ecards is one way to let these brave men and women know that what they do is appreciated by the American people. The best way to support the troops is to let them know how much they are appreciated by keeping in touch with them and supporting them any way possible and to pray for them everyday.

Many people throughout history have lost loved ones because of war. These people need to know that the sacrifices they have made and the losses they have gone through are acknowledged and appreciated. Acknowledgements can be made by sending free Veteran's Day ecards to let them know that they are honored and are thought of at this holiday time. This is one day out of the year that Americans can take out the time to be thankful for those who have suffered and died to keep America free and to help to keep people in other countries free. Parents and teachers should acknowledge Veterans Day by teaching the children of this generation about the sacrifices that have been made by great men and women throughout history and about those who are still making sacrifices today.
