Rebellion
Rebellion entered into the world when Adam first rebelled against a commandment of God and ate of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, and man-kind has been rebelling every since that point. In a nut shell, having a rebellious attitude is defined in the Bible as just about anything that opposes God or his laws. What we discover about man-kind through the Scriptures, however, is that rebellious acts are from the heart or core of that first and original sin, which demonstrates our wanting to be in control of ourselves and our destinies. As Eve was tempted to sin by the lure of having a great knowledge and therefore being like God, so every human on earth has or will be tempted to want to be his or her own god, as well. But, the Bible has some pretty interesting rebel examples and leading the list is one of the sins that God finds abominable, and that is the sin of idolatry. The very first of the ten commandments is that God's people shall have no other gods before Him. But Israel failed miserably at keeping this commandment and as we will see, so does just about every human on planet earth.
When the nation of Israel was released from slavery in Egypt and went into the desert, God performed miracle after miracle in rescuing and caring for his people. But, even with the signs and wonders performed by God himself, the people resorted to idolatry as a means of attempting to save themselves from any feared hardships. After spending forty years wandering through the wilderness and paying the price for not believing in the Words of God, Israel was once again faced with a decision to follow God alone or to choose a path that would surely lead to death. "But if thine heart turn away, so thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land whither thou passest over the Jordan to go to posses it" (Deuteronomy 30:17-18). We find that in the book of Ezekiel that as the years passed and the nation of Israel grew to be a force to be reckoned with for surrounding nations, the people of Israel did anything but follow this appeal and warning from God. In a direct action of rebellion, Israel worshiped other gods. "Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and didst commit whoredom with them." (Ezekiel 16:17)
Not only did God's chosen people commit idolatry by worshiping idols, they also offended the Lord by seeking the guidance and counsel of sources other than the Lord who had been so faithful in leading them. Just like the people of today, the people of Israel would grow impatient and seek to find answers and solutions to problems outside of God's direction, which can, at times, seem slow in coming. But God considered it rebellion and promised that there would be punishment for consulting with mediums, psychics, and astrologers. "Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee" (Isaiah 47:13). "Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin." (Isaiah 30:1). And, throughout the history of man, the Bible records one rebellious act of man-kind after another. God not only charged Israel with being rebellious children, but he also held this nation responsible for her poor example to surrounding countries. The people of Israel were to be lights unto the nations, showing the rest of the world how to live and serve a holy God. But, in idolatry and in a multitude of other sins, she failed miserably. Not trusting in God's laws, Israel and the people of the world today have traded God's truths for lies and worshiped creation and the gifts he has given us as opposed to the One who gives. God's commandments concerning purity and sex have been ignored as well, and the sanctity of marriage has come to mean little more than a piece of paper to man-kind. God's Word is clear that there were consequences for Israel and there will be consequences for those of us today who claim to follow him, yet set our hearts on selfish desires and motives. "Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even the women did change the natural use into which is against nature." (Romans 1:25-26)
The New Testament writer, Paul the Apostle explains clearly that idol worship is demonic worship. Anything that is worshiped, (even a comfortable life, money, career. another person) is having fellowship with demons, because we battle not against flesh and blood but against principalities in the heavens. If it's not worshiping and trusting in God, it is worshiping and trusting in something other than God, which is the number one objective of Satan and his army of fallen angels. Proverbs 17:11 tells us that a man of evil is a man that is rebellious. To find out more about what rebellion against God, click on the links above.
