Law School

Law school is an incredibly demanding type of study that requires many hours of research and reading, perseverance, high intellect and the ability to write quickly and efficiently. When choosing this field of study, it is important to understand the difference between a degree in law and a JD or juris doctorate degree. A degree in law is an educational program that will enhance one's understanding of the United States legal system. It does not enable a graduate to practice, but can significantly improve job skills and abilities as they pertain to any number of career paths. Many business owners receive these degrees in order to fully understand the legal implications of running a business.

A JD or juris doctorate degree is usually created to give the student a comprehensive background suitable for admittance to sit for their home state bar exam. In order to be eligible to sit for the Bar, a student must be a graduate from an ABA or American Bar Association approved school. Law schools that are not ABA approved may offer other avenues for qualifying to sit for the state bar, but these qualifications vary by state and institution. It is recommended that a student wishing to practice in his/her home state contact their state bar association for further information regarding approved schools and state bar admissions requirements.

Attendance typically lasts in duration from 2 years (an accelerated schedule) to 5 years (a part time schedule). Most law schools require classroom attendance during the daylight hours, but there are some that are beginning to offer evening and weekend programs as well. Most states require that an admissions applicant hold a Bachelors degree in any subject area, and take the LSAT or Admissions Test. The Admissions test is offered twice per year, and a score over 150 is considered adequate for many institutions. In addition to the LSAT score, GPA is taken into account. GPA combined with LSAT score provides a school Index score which is a major deciding factor for eligibility of admission. Not all schools use the index score, and some offer alternative or special circumstance admissions procedures.

Getting into one of these programs is no easy task, and where university or institution is, can have a large impact on the salary received throughout an attorney's career. Most graduates after receiving their JD and passing their state bar exam are offered jobs with local governments, and private firms. Very few attorneys start their own firm with little to no practical experience in the field. Although the JD degree program is general in nature concerning the study of law, there are law schools that offer advanced degrees for Legal specializations. These law school advanced specialization programs usually last from 1-3 years in duration and can substantially increase an attorneys marketability. This course of study is not for everyone. It is advised that students carefully consider their choice to become a lawyer before enrolling. If, after researching, a decision is made to attend law school, it can be one of the most satisfying academic challenges ever encountered. "And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of the law very plainly." (Deuteronomy 27:8)
