Fatherhood

Fathers have been given an extraordinary responsibility from God, not only to be the leader, but to love, guide, provide, protect, encourage and support his family. Deuteronomy 6:6-9 says fatherhood demands men to diligently encourage their children to learn the Lords commandments; "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates." The bible instructs parents to teach children the ways of the Lord, discipline against sinful behaviors and provide a strong foundation for the future.

A child's first exposure to spirituality is usually at home, through the teaching of parents. Fathers are to bring children up "...in the nurture and admonition of the Lord", (Ephesians 6:4), by first setting the example. It has been suggested that a child's most powerful influence is their same-sex parent, so Godly men raise Godly men, who then raise Godly men. Parents should be cautious as to whom they let influence their family through personal or business relationships. Fatherhood includes keeping holy relationships so that children will also keep friends who share a passion for Christ; "Whoso keepeth the law is a wise sone: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father" (Proverbs 28:7). Discipline is often a touchy subject for parents who do not know when, where and how to correct the sinful, disobedient behaviors of their children. From spanking to time-outs, God tells fathers that discipline is love and to always discipline in love; "My son despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction; for whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth" (Proverbs 3:11-12). Teaching the scripture to a child will help them understand how their punishments for sins are acts of love against Satan. Correcting your children, throughout your fatherhood, will bring delight into your soul and peace that only Godly discipline can provide.

Fatherhood must include thoughtful consideration for the futures of children and how to provide a strong foundation for a child's spiritual growth. This includes leadership of the household, emotional support, and financial stability; "A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just" (Proverbs 13:22). Scripture tells us that fathers who do not provide for their house are worse than heathens and a man who is greedy brings trouble to his own house. It is a huge responsibility for a man to be solely responsible for the building up of a home and can not be done with out the guidance and wisdom of our Heavenly Father God. Above all, God wants all parents to know He is with them and will help them raise wonderful, spiritual children for his purposes.
