Patriotic Holidays

The Fourth of July is one day out of the year when every American is allowed--even expected--to be thoroughly patriotic by flying the flag, dressing in red, white and blue, and by attending events commemorating the origin of the U.S.A. Fireworks are the most vivid of the celebrations on this holiday. Communities and individuals across the land set off everything from small firecrackers to huge fireworks that fill the sky with color and the air with loud sounds. The audience reactions are usually extended "ohs" and "ahs". Little children wave tiny flags on the sidelines of parades where someone portraying Uncle Sam usually appears, and high school bands strut their stuff.

Every citizen of America, and many people who aren't, know that the Declaration of Independence was signed on that memorable date in 1776. The Fourth of July signifies the end of British rule in America. From current perspective, it is hard to believe there were people who didn't want to be independent from England. They thought they were going to be better protected by being part of the British Empire, and the bond to the British homeland was very strong. Those folks saw the independence movement as an act of treason to the crown they respected. Lucky for America today, they lost the argument.

On the Internet, celebrations of America's independence are listed everywhere, as are sites for purchasing decorations for parties. Historical information is available on some sites for those who want to know the details of what happened in 1776. Book stores have literature on the subject of American history that will answer any questions about the forefathers.

Since one of the reasons many immigrants came here was a desire for religious freedom, declaring their independence meant they no longer needed to be loyal to the Church of England. Christians especially appreciate the freedom to express diversity while all gathering under a common title. The Fourth of July signifies the patriotic bond of all citizens, and provides an occasion to express that bond in a tangible way. Whether the country is enjoying peace, or engaged in war, Americans celebrate the holiday in the same ways every year, and all the celebrations are bent on showing loyalty to the homeland. Patriotic symbols are present in every nation, beginning with their national flag. America is no different. The stars and stripes have inspired patriotic emotions in the form of books, movies, and songs. Poems have been written in praise of the nation and its flag. Along with all those Fourth of July celebrations there are songs like "God Bless America" that are representative of a national acknowledgment of God's sovereignty over the country, and His inclusion in its very beginnings. Freedom of worship is one of the amendments to the Constitution known as the Bill of Rights. All of the rights and benefits listed in our Constitution are being celebrated on this national holiday.

America is unique among nations because of her freedoms and because of her Constitution. Other nations have come to democracy after other forms of government, such as a monarchy, dictatorship, or theocracy. America began as a representative republic and has continued so for more than two hundred years. While the nation was almost torn apart by a Civil War, it survived to come together again as one nation, indivisible and under God. People will always be ready to fight for this country and what it stands for, whether on the battlefield or in the political debate.

Freedom of speech gives the right to speak one's minds without fear of reprisal, even if it is in criticism of the government. In a dictatorship, and sometimes a monarchy, people aren't allowed to criticize the government--in fact, they are punished for doing so. Therefore, Fourth of July celebrations are truely celebrations about the dignity of the human person and his or her right to pursue happiness, while endowing him or her with the responsibility of respecting fellow citizens in like request. Americans stand up on this holiday to salute their flag, and to give thanks to God, who blessed our founding fathers with intelligence and foresight: "Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations" (Deuteronomy 7:9).
