Interior Design School

Interior design school may be the perfect training ground for the person who loves furniture and color and seeing ideas come together in such a way as to make other people happy. Few things are more pleasing to the eye or senses than a living space that excites in one room and soothes in another, all thanks to professionally designed interiors that pull all the things together a customer is looking for in a dwelling place. For the artist, nothing is a better compliment than to say that his work is moving to the emotions or the senses. And for all the different types of artistry that live, none can be more personal or intimate than the talent of an interior designer. The efforts of the graduate of a designer school will always evoke emotion, sometimes of profound joy, often of shock and dismay, but never without a genuine response. The desire to seek an education at an acclaimed design school is honorable and can lead to a very lucrative career.

Upon graduating from an interior design school, a person will know the current market trends in the design and function of furniture, space planning, building codes and the use of color to evoke emotion. Additionally, a graduate will also be able to know how building codes, building materials and the functionality of available space will be best suited to a particular application. The astute grad will learn how to listen carefully to the client's needs and develop a living space meeting those expectations as well as providing suitable surprises and perhaps even serendipitous attractions not considered by the customer. Of course, skills beyond the artistic will be covered by the school that has integrity, for the designer must not only be able to design and create visual masterpieces, but must also be able to write reports that are correct in all aspects of communication including proper grammar and spelling as well as being able to express one's designs in language that can be understood and comprehended by other professionals such as inspectors, architects, builders, contractors and the client.

Surprisingly, the curriculum of a respected interior design school will include some course work in psychology. Not surprisingly, the natural ties between moods and design are critical for the designer to understand. While the novice student may have trouble understanding the ties to design, an experienced professional designer will appreciate the delving into sensation and perception, consciousness, personality differences, motivation, mental disorders and psychotherapy. Additionally, many designer schools also stress public speaking, as a designer may have to speak in front of many committees tasked with approving specific designs. The curriculum of an interior design school may also include a look at history, for it is in the appreciation of tradition and custom that a more even handed approach to design is born. The promises of Scripture are replete for those who truly pout God first in their lives. "Trust in the Lord and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the Lord and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart." (Psalm 37:4, 5)

One of the most important aspects of the interior design school requirements is the ongoing development of a portfolio that showcases a student's work while at the school. In this portfolio, the work displayed will show that a student has entry level skills in the designer marketplace. In most cases, these portfolios are an extremely important part of the interview process when graduates apply for after graduation positions. In many cases, furniture stores, builders, architects and art schools are prime candidates for hiring the talents of an interior designer. While entry level graduate of interior design school do not break the bank when it comes to income levels, as a professional advances through the years and develops a reputation of renown, incomes can be stratospheric.

The requirements for graduation from an interior design school will vary from school to school. Courses may run for as few as six quarters all the way to four year institutions. Schools also have varying degrees of respect. Typically schools in larger cities have the highest reputations for their graduates are often then hired by large firms who covet their abilities. But while this is a generalization, a potential student should thoroughly check out every school's reputation, looking for graduates who have gone on to distinguished careers. Like everything else, there are schools that are in it strictly for the tuition and others that are genuinely interested in producing well-prepared graduates for the marketplace.

Most interior design school tuition rates are quite expensive. Cost per credit hour may be as much or more than many four year universities. A person wishing to take classes at such a school will be eligible for government educational loans just like students attending a community or four year college. To begin the process, a student will have to fill out a FAFSA form which surveys a student's economic condition and in many cases the parents of the student as well. Fifty thousand dollars in student loans will not be atypical for graduates of an interior designer institution. Graduates should expect to have to repay this money over a long period of time, which may amount to as much as four hundred dollars a month for twenty years. A person's passion is the finest motivator and reason for beginning a career, so if a person has been recognized by others as having wonderful taste in clothes, furniture, colors and design, this career is a natural expression of that passion.
