International Study Abroad Programs
An international study abroad program might be the chance of a lifetime for students to see others countries and cultures while getting their education. After graduating from college, some people may never have the opportunity to travel or learn at the leisure that a student has. This is one of the reasons why students should take this opportunity while it is available. This type of opportunity is a great path to self-discovery, extensive travel and can evoke a greater appreciation for the United States. "For the Kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling unto a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods." (Matthew 25:14)
Each college or university typically has a department that is specifically dedicated to helping students with the planning and particulars for studying in other countries. Strong candidates for this are students with a junior or senior status. A student will have wanted to have picked a major and completed the basic courses in that subject area before experiencing such an extensive change though. Many of these education systems offer courses that are career specific in both upper and lower divisions of coursework; however, students of any program are encouraged to apply. The length of international study abroad programs is contingent upon the course of learning that is chosen. A student who wishes to use an international study abroad program for intensive foreign language courses may only have classes during the summer months, while someone studying international business could study for an entire one or two semesters. Academic counselors and department advisers will be able to help determine the best academic courses to study while abroad to help ensure that all credits will transfer back to the home university.
Some colleges and universities offer cooperations in this area, that is, if one student at each of the universities decides to study internationally, the colleges will trade the students and each student will pay the regular tuition at their respective school. Many international study abroad programs are not this simple but the program department will have more information. Candidates may also still be eligible and apply for scholarships and financial aid during international study abroad programs. Other things for students to consider while deciding are insurance coverage, work and student visas and unique country customs.
All those interested in an international study abroad program should research all countries of interest and place special emphasis on learning customs, holidays, the educational structure, the language and slang of the language and etiquette. Not acknowledging a national custom can prove to be quite embarrassing! For someone who has never traveled abroad, being in a strange land can be a bit intimidating and prove to be a dream or a nightmare, depending on the drive of the student.
